German semiconductor company Infineon on Friday said it would lay off 3,000 employees as part of a cost-reduction program to bring the company back to profitability.

The company blamed the layoffs on “adverse foreign exchange rate development and the requirements of the reorganization of the company,” saying that headcount reduction was “inevitable.”  (PC World)

In addition to an overall $269M operating loss, the company is taking an $876M charge against the purchase of ATI so it can abandon the handheld graphics and digital TV markets. (Engadget)

Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to lay off 212 people in Broomfield and Louisville by the end of September, and more cuts may be coming as part of a previously announced downsizing, state and company officials said Thursday.

The cuts represent about 8 percent of Sun’s 2,593 employees in Louisville and Broomfield. (Examiner.com)
