The beleaguered manufacturer is no stranger to financial struggles at this point — nor layoffs, for that matter — but the latest round cuts some 6 percent of employees from Moto’s global operations, and 3,000 of the 4,000 will come directly from the handset division. (Engadget)

Advice to Moto….get beyond the Razr.  It had a nice run, time to innovate.  Abandon your proprietary OS initiatives and move to Android and/or Symbian.  Perhaps you’ll have a shot at staying in the cell phone business.  It’s a long shot, but still a shot!

officials confirmed today that $800 million in cuts planned for 2009 will require laying off about 3,000 workers, with a little more than two-thirds of those job cuts coming from the handset division.

About 3,000 layoffs will be made globally “across all businesses and functions” with a “little over two-thirds of these layoffs in the handset division,” a spokeswoman said in an e-mail. The communications equipment maker had 66,000 employees at the end of 2007, she said. (Computer World)

There are going to be only a handful of handset manufacturers in the future (Nokia, SE, Apple, and RIM).   Trouble ahead for everyone else.

Motorola took another hit Thursday in announcing, through a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, that it will lay off 2,600 employees. As a result, it will take a $104 million pretax charge in the first quarter of the year for severance costs.  (CNET)
